Supreme Court grants bail to Jayalalithaa
New Delhi: The Supreme Court today granted bail to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
Jayalalithaa has got the bail after spending 21 days in a Bangalore jail. Jayalalthaa was sentenced to four years in jail in a DA case.
Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy said that the SC granted the bail on the ground that the Karnataka High Court is yet to decided whether the sentence given to Jayalalithaa in the DA case should be suspended or not.

Swamy, who is also a parry in this case, further said that the SC has put many conditions on Jayalaithaa while granting her bail. The SC has asked Jayalithaa to submit all relevant copies of the case by December 18. The court has also asked her to ensure that her supporters maintain peace in Tamil Nadu. The court has also asked Jayalalithaa not to give any petition that could delay the trial in this case.
An apex court bench headed by Chief Justice H.L. Dattu said that all four will be released on bail subject to the satisfaction of the condition by the trial court.
The court made it clear that Jayalalithaa and three others will complete their appeal with all relevant documents before the high court by December 18 and thereafter, it will ask the high court to expedite and complete the hearing on the appeal within three months.
The court told senior counsel Fali S. Nariman, appearing for Jayalalithaa, that it will not grant a day more to his client if they don't complete the paperwork of their appeal before the high court with all the documents within a span of two months.
Jayalalithaa is presently in a Bangalore jail after her conviction in the disproportionate assets case. The former chief minister was awarded four-year prison term and a fine of Rs.100 crore.
She had moved to the Supreme Court Oct 9 seeking the bail.
Jayalalithaa, along with her aide Sasikala Natrajan, V.K. Sudhakaran and J. Ilavarasi, Oct 7 were refused bail by the Karnataka High Court which held that there were no grounds for granting bail.
Besides her health grounds, Jayalalithaa has invoked section 389 of the Code of Criminal Procedure seeking the suspension of her sentence and grant of bail till the pendency of her appeal against the trial court order.
The chief of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has been jailed after being convicted for acquiring assets disproportionate to her income as the Tamil Nadu chief minister during 1991-1996.
Three others—Sasikala, V.N. Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi—were also similarly sentenced. The Karnataka high court denied her appeal, where she had contended that the lower court failed to consider several important judgements in her favour.
